Multi-Platform AI Search Strategy: Why Single-Platform GEO Strategy Fails

Only 11% of Domains Get Cited by Both ChatGPT and Perplexity

If you’re optimizing for ChatGPT and assuming that covers “AI search,” the data has bad news.

Only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. And just 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot rank in Google’s top 10.

At Radiant Elephant, this is one of the first things we show prospects when they come to us thinking GEO means “optimize for ChatGPT.” It doesn’t. It means optimizing across a fragmented landscape where each platform draws from different sources, trusts different signals, and cites different content. A brand visible on one platform can be invisible on every other.

We build GEO programs from our office in Northampton, Massachusetts for clients ranging from local Pioneer Valley businesses to national B2B manufacturers. The multi-platform reality affects all of them. A local restaurant getting cited by Perplexity (which favors Reddit) might be invisible on ChatGPT (which favors Wikipedia and Forbes). A national SaaS company dominating ChatGPT citations might not exist on Google AI Overviews. Every client needs a platform-specific strategy, and the data explains why.

I covered platform divergence as one of 15 evidence-backed tactics in a comprehensive review of every major GEO study. This article goes deeper on the platform-by-platform breakdown and how to build a strategy that covers all of them.

The overlap between platforms is shockingly low

Search Atlas studied 5.5 million AI responses and found all model pairs show low domain overlap, with OpenAI and Perplexity at the bottom at approximately 5-12% median. For every 100 domains Perplexity cites, fewer than 12 also get cited by ChatGPT.

Ahrefs’ August 2025 analysis reinforced the pattern: only 12% of URLs cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot also rank in Google’s traditional top 10. The AI citation ecosystem operates largely independently of the organic ranking ecosystem, and largely independently across platforms.

Profound’s data adds a temporal dimension: 40-60% of cited domains change monthly across AI platforms (citation drift). The sources being cited this month are different from the ones cited last month, even when the query hasn’t changed. Point-in-time measurements are misleading. Aggregate tracking across platforms over 30+ day windows is the only approach that produces actionable data.

Spreading across platforms works better when your own site is tightly connected. Here’s our internal linking strategy.

Each platform has a completely different sourcing philosophy

This isn’t a minor variation. These are fundamentally different citation ecosystems.

Platform Primary citation sources Freshness bias Key optimization lever
ChatGPT Wikipedia (7.8%), Forbes, Reuters, Reddit Strong (76% from last 30 days) Authority + earned media
Perplexity Reddit (6.6%), YouTube, Gartner, Yelp Very strong (50% current year) UGC + community presence
Google AI Overviews YouTube, Wikipedia, Reddit, Quora Moderate Fan-out queries + video
Google AI Mode Wikipedia, LinkedIn, YouTube Moderate Topical authority + brand
Copilot Forbes (2.1M citations), Gartner, LinkedIn Unknown Bing SEO + IndexNow
Claude Brave Search index Unknown General web authority
Gemini YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, Gartner Balanced Multi-modal content

ChatGPT is encyclopedic. Wikipedia dominates at 7.8% of citations, followed by established media. Getting cited by ChatGPT means being present in the publications ChatGPT trusts: Wikipedia, Forbes, Reuters, TechRadar, NerdWallet. Entity optimization through Wikipedia and Wikidata is one of the strongest levers here.

Perplexity is community-driven. Reddit leads at 6.6%, with YouTube, Gartner, and Yelp following. It searches in real time and values experience-based, user-generated content over institutional sources. Authentic community presence is the path.

Google AI Overviews lean on its own organic index, with YouTube, Wikipedia, Reddit, and Quora as top external sources. The fan-out mechanism generates 8-16 sub-queries, making comprehensive on-site content and YouTube companion videos the strongest levers.

Copilot has a pronounced Forbes preference at 2.1 million citations, significantly higher than any other domain on any other platform. Gartner and LinkedIn are secondary sources. Bing SEO and IndexNow submissions are the primary optimization levers.

Content format preferences diverge too

Profound analyzed 177 million sources and found comparative listicles account for 32.5% of all AI citations. Nearly a third, dominating across every platform. If your content includes comparison tables, ranked lists, or “X vs Y” structures, it’s significantly more likely to be cited than narrative content.

Blogs and opinion pieces: 9.91%. Commercial and store pages: 4.73%. Video content: 0.95% (despite YouTube’s dominance, transcripts are cited as text, not as video).

The conversion quality makes this worth the effort

AI referral traffic is still small. Conductor’s 2026 benchmarks report (3.3 billion sessions across 13,000+ domains) found it averages only 1.08% of total website traffic. But the quality premium is real.

AI search visitors convert at 23x the rate of traditional organic visitors (Ahrefs, June 2025). Half a percent of traffic generated 12.1% of signups. Semrush values AI search visitors at 4.4x traditional organic. Adobe found AI-referred visitors show 23% lower bounce rates, 41% longer time on site, 12% more pages per visit. Brands cited in AI Overviews see 35% higher organic CTR (Seer Interactive).

The volume is small. The value per visit is massive. And the volume is growing fast: ChatGPT referrals grew 52% year-over-year, Gemini referrals surged 388%.

How we approach multi-platform GEO at Radiant Elephant

Here’s how I structure the platform-specific strategy for clients. The approach is the same whether it’s a professional services firm in Amherst or a national manufacturer.

For ChatGPT: Prioritize earned media in authoritative publications and Wikipedia/Wikidata entity signals. ChatGPT trusts institutional sources. If you can get written about in Forbes, Reuters, or an industry-specific publication with editorial standards, that feeds ChatGPT’s citation source pool directly.

For Perplexity: Prioritize genuine Reddit and YouTube presence. Perplexity values real human experience over polished editorial. Build authentic community contributions using the approaches I described in the Reddit article and the YouTube article in this GEO series.

For Google AI Overviews: Prioritize comprehensive on-site content clusters and YouTube companion videos. Google’s AI draws heavily from its own organic index and from YouTube. The fan-out mechanism means topic depth matters more than single-keyword ranking.

For Copilot: Prioritize Forbes and Gartner presence plus LinkedIn content. Submit new and updated content URLs to IndexNow for faster Bing indexing.

Cross-platform repurposing: One piece of original research becomes an on-site HTML article (Google AI Overviews), a LinkedIn article (Copilot), a YouTube walkthrough (Perplexity and Google), pitched to Forbes or an industry publication (ChatGPT), and discussed genuinely on relevant Reddit threads (Perplexity). Five platform-specific outputs from one content investment.

In our national GEO case study, this multi-platform approach is what produced 283 AI citations across platforms. Not just ChatGPT. Not just Google AI Overviews. Citations distributed across multiple AI surfaces because the brand mention strategy targeted the sources each platform trusts.

Five implementation examples

Example 1: B2B SaaS company targeting all platforms

For ChatGPT: Month 1: Commission Wikipedia article (company has TechCrunch and VentureBeat coverage qualifying as reliable sources). Month 2: CEO secures Forbes Technology Council contributor spot. Month 3: Pitch original research to established media.

For Perplexity: Month 1: CEO begins contributing genuine technical answers on r/[IndustrySubreddit]. Month 2: Launch YouTube channel with product comparisons and customer interviews (corrected transcripts). Month 3: Solicit 30+ reviews on G2 and Gartner Peer Insights.

For Google AI Overviews: Month 1: Build hub-and-spoke content cluster around primary use case (pillar + 15 spokes). Month 2: YouTube companion video for every pillar page. Month 3: Passage-level optimization across all spoke pages.

For Copilot: Forbes contributor articles (overlaps with ChatGPT), Gartner reviews (overlaps with Perplexity), CEO LinkedIn article series, IndexNow submissions.

Measurement: Weekly prompt testing across all four platforms (20 prompts each). Monthly aggregate visibility score. Quarterly platform-by-platform trend analysis.

Example 2: Local restaurant group (3 locations in Western Massachusetts)

For Google AI Overviews: “Behind the Menu” YouTube series with corrected transcripts mentioning restaurant names and locations. Complete, data-rich Google Business Profile descriptions. Detailed menu pages in crawlable HTML (not PDF menus).

For Perplexity: Monitor r/WesternMass and r/Northampton for restaurant recommendations. Respond from an owner account with specific details: “Our cacio e pepe is made tableside with a half-wheel of Pecorino Romano. Wait is usually 20-30 minutes on Saturday nights.” Complete Yelp profiles with owner responses to reviews.

For ChatGPT: Pursue local food media coverage. Submit for local “Best Of” awards generating independent editorial mentions.

Measurement: Monthly testing of 15 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI: “best Italian restaurant in Northampton,” “where to eat in the Pioneer Valley,” “best pasta near Amherst.”

Example 3: E-commerce outdoor gear brand

For ChatGPT: Pitch product reviews to Outside Magazine, GearJunkie, Switchback Travel. Pursue industry awards (Backpacker Editors’ Choice). Editorial mentions in authoritative media.

For Perplexity: YouTube “Field Test” series comparing products with specific data (weight, durability, weather resistance). Authentic engagement on r/Ultralight, r/CampingGear, r/hiking with field test results and gear advice.

For Google AI Overviews: YouTube companion videos for each product line. Product pages with FAQ schema, specification tables, and comparison content. Each product page includes 120-180 word self-contained sections answering specific buyer questions.

For Copilot: If the brand has Wirecutter or Forbes Gear recommendations, these feed Copilot’s source preferences. LinkedIn articles from the founder on product development and sustainability.

Example 4: Professional services consulting firm

For ChatGPT: CEO publishes in Harvard Business Review, Forbes, or Fast Company. Ensure any existing Wikipedia mentions are accurate. Thought leadership in publications ChatGPT trusts for consulting recommendations.

For Perplexity: Partners contribute genuine insights on r/consulting and industry subreddits. YouTube thought leadership videos (10-15 minutes, corrected transcripts). Gartner Peer Insights reviews from clients.

For Google AI Overviews: Topic clusters around each practice area with 10-15 spoke pages. Case study data in answer-first format. YouTube companion content for pillar pages.

For Copilot: LinkedIn is a primary Copilot source. Partners publish weekly on their specialty areas. Forbes contributor articles create dual coverage for ChatGPT and Copilot.

Cross-platform repurposing in action: One industry benchmark report becomes an on-site page (Google AI Overviews), a LinkedIn article by the lead partner (Copilot), a YouTube presentation walkthrough (Perplexity and Google), pitched to Forbes or HBR (ChatGPT), and discussed on relevant Reddit threads (Perplexity). Five outputs from one investment.

Example 5: Regional healthcare system

For ChatGPT: Ensure the hospital’s Wikipedia article is comprehensive and well-sourced. Physicians publish in PubMed-indexed journals and contribute to medical reference sites ChatGPT trusts.

For Perplexity: Physicians create YouTube health education videos with corrected transcripts. System monitors health-related Reddit discussions (providing general education, not specific medical advice, following ethics guidelines). Encourage patient reviews on Google and Healthgrades.

For Google AI Overviews: Each condition page restructured for passage-level optimization with question-based H2s and 120-180 word answer sections. YouTube companion videos for high-volume condition queries. FAQPage schema on every condition and treatment page.

For Copilot: Complete physician profiles on Healthgrades. Department heads publish on LinkedIn about clinical innovations. IndexNow submissions for all updated content.

YMYL requirement across all platforms: Every piece of health content must be authored by a named, credentialed physician with Person schema, board certification markup, and sameAs links to medical directory profiles. The E-E-A-T bar is highest in healthcare, on every platform.

Treating “AI search” as one thing is like treating “social media” as one thing

Nobody would run the same content strategy on LinkedIn and TikTok. The audiences, formats, and algorithms are different. AI search platforms are equally distinct. ChatGPT and Perplexity have less than 11% domain overlap. That’s less overlap than LinkedIn and Instagram probably have in brand mentions.

Build platform-specific. Track platform-specific. But measure in aggregate. The total share of AI visibility across all platforms is what predicts business impact, not performance on any single one.

I covered multi-platform strategy alongside every other evidence-backed GEO tactic in the complete research review.
